LNF Participation in ITER

The LNF, taking as basis the broad range of capabilities in fusion physics and technology developed since its initiation, participates in the development of ITER systems and diagnostics within the framework of existing EU Consortia. Particular emphasis is given to:

Reflectometry diagnostic. The LNF coordinates the design of antennas and waveguides, as well as their integration, for ITER port-plugs and the design and integration of ex-vessel components and transmission lines from the port-plugs to their diagnostic room. Aspart of this the group performs electromagnetic force analysis, wave propagation calculations and antenna geometry optimization.

Visible-Infrarred wide angle viewing diagnostic. The LNF contributes to the optical design, optical engineering analysis, structural analysis and radiation characterization of optical materials for non-port plug elements of this ITER diagnostic.

NBIITER

Structural model of passive magnetic shield and ACCC coils developed by LNF

Heating/NBI. The LNF carries out the engineering design of the Magnetic Field Reduction System of the Heating Neutral Beams for ITER. This is comprised of the Passive Magnetic Shield (PMS) and the Active Compensation/Correction coils (ACCC). The LNF also performs structural analysis, magnetic force calculations, magnetic field requirement verification and coil current optimization.

Radiation testing service for ITER components and Systems: During the burning process of ITER plasmas, large quantities of radiation will be released mainly in the form of energetic neutrons and gamma rays which could give rise to severe radiation damage to components and devices such as diagnostic components. The LNF provides a gamma ray irradiation testing service for such systems before installation in ITER.

Control, Data access and Communication (CODAC)

• “Fast Plant System Controller prototype Development”.
• “Fast Plant System Controller prototype amendment for PXIe form-factor”.
• “ITER Data Archiving Prototype Development”.
• “CODAC Operation Applications Support”.
•”NDM-compliant EPICS device support for NI PXIe-796xR”.
• “Framework service contract for provision of System and Instrumentation Engineering Support”.

Test Blanket Modules. The LNF contributes to tritium behaviour modelling and, making use of its unique experimental facilities, to the validation of critical engineering design parameters.

PPITER

Thermo-hydraulic analysis of the ITER EPP Diagnostic Shield Module

Remote Handling. The LNF is developing a conceptual design of gripping tools for Upper Port Plug extraction/insertion tasks as part of the EFDA GOT (Goal Oriented Training) RH program. It participates in the development of an ATS (Air Transfer System) test facility and in the design of neutral beam cell RH equipment such as a monorail crane.

Diagnostic integration in Equatorial Port Plugs (EPP). The LNF is carrying out a thermo-hydraulic analysis of the Diagnostic Shielding Module (DSM) cooling system for EPP1, this being required to remove thermal loads resulting from nuclear heating of DSMs, as well as to fulfil baking requirements.
